Beautifully wrought from the world of signs and symbols in our everyday lives, Sydney Dance Company’s Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela’s celebrated production, The Land of Yes & The Land of No comes to Riverside Theatres and is playing from Thursday, 21 June through to Saturday, 23 June 2012.
Originally created in London, Bonachela’s piece is inspired by everyday signs and the way we choose to interpret them. Through a dynamic series of performances, Bonachela explores the way in which society is guided by the cues of these everyday signs. Every exquisite movement picks out the irresistible intensity of Ezio Bosso’s score.
“I have always been intrigued by the way our lives can be affected by signs. They reflect our decisions, risks and adventures. These simple commands and instructions resonate deeply in our lives and trigger memories and emotions. This became the soil for The Land of Yes and The Land of No,” said Choreographer, Rafael Bonachela.
Designed by British team made up of Alan MacDonald on production, lighting designer Guy Hoare and costume designer Theo Clinkard, the magnificent dancers are placed against a vibrant set made of fluoro tubes and a wall of rich, constantly changing colour in a physical exploration of the everyday indicators and markers that guide our life and decisions.
“The set piece is an abstracted representation of the façade of a building – we don’t know what it is; it could be a house, it could be an office block… but it is fundamentally about crossing a threshold,” said Designer Alan MacDonald.
Rafael Bonachela was born in Barcelona, Spain where he began his early dance training before moving to London. In 1992 joined the legendary Rambert Dance Company. In 2008, Rafael premiered his first full-length production 360° for Sydney Dance Company. Less than six months later, he was appointed Artistic Director making headlines around the dance world. Rafael Bonachela’s internationally recognised talent has seen him work not only with contemporary dance at the highest level but also with artists from popular culture, such as Kylie Minogue andTina Turner. Such collaborative efforts reflect the inspiration he finds and utilizes from culture today.
There's no denying Rafael Bonachela's The Land Of Yes And The Land Of No is extraordinarily beautiful.
