People can have their beliefs challenged by being asked to take a second look at the underlying stereotypes that are often the basis of those beliefs.

In Look Closer, photographer and film-maker Daniel King, aims to show the negative stereotypes associated with people of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander descent and dares people to review, acknowledge and perhaps, even re-think their own prejudices.

The series of black and white photographs are presented with dry humor to produce a body of work that is simultaneously powerful and playful. Each image is labeled with a piece of conversational context that are both humorous and devastating in their familiarity. They are examples of the types of conversation that are still all to common in Australia. The images can expose a person to the prejudices for the first the first time; lead them to acknowledge their existence and impact, or to serve as a mirror that reflects back the viewer’s own misconceptions. This process can lead to the acknowledgement of personal prejudices that are vehemently denied.

Many issues can only be discussed once they have been publicly revealed. King’s photographs have the potential to start this conversation. These dialogues open up the possibility of a world where there is no need or desire to stereotype cultures in such a way.
