This year, West Australian artist Madeleine Clear marks 31 years of exhibitions at Greenhill Galleries, on top of many more as part of the Australian arts community.

With a strong local client base, several prestigious art awards under her belt and representation in numerous influential private and corporate collections, Madeleine continues her love affair with the Australian environment, using the minutiae she finds in her environment as a metaphor for her continuing exploration of the notion of fragility – emotional, psychological and physical, as well as environmental.

Some works in this exhibition are made up of numerous detailed graphite and charcoal drawings executed on small panels, which can be read independently or as a whole. Others, such as the featured work Over The Spinifex, are produced on small canvasses using oils.

“Spending time in the Pilbara recently focussed my attention on spinifex – so rugged, yet so vulnerable and seemingly so inhospitable. Yet it dies from its centre and in doing so creates a nest for wildlife. Kangaroos, goats and birds all seek shelter there.”

Madeleine Clear enjoys working the detail in her drawings as she feel it reflects her central idea. “A certain abstract element comes into play when assembling the panels, which makes for a balance against the detail.”

Clear has produced a series of successful exhibitions in Australia since 1981, as well as receiving a number of prestigious awards.

She is in some of the country’s most influential collections including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Holmes a Court Collection, Art Bank, Princess Margaret Hospital, BHP and the Lotteries Commission as well as numerous private collections internationally.
