Sandown Raceway: VIC

The famous Sandown Raceway has long stood as the premium car racing circuit in Melbourne, opening in 1962 it held six Australian Grand Prix’s featuring word famous drivers such as Stirling Moss & Bruce McLaren. Throughout the 60’s & 70’s the track continued to attract international stars along with the best of Australia’s drivers. In the late 60’s Australia’s traditional Holden/Ford rivalry really surfaced until Peter Brock dominated with seven straight wins from 1975-81. 1984 saw the first appearance of Group A Touring Cars with the first ever 500km race named the Castrol 500. The race was then held as a sprint round until 2000, then as three 150 km races with pit stops in 2001 and 2002. They returned to the 500 km format in 2003 with a sponsorship deal with Betta Electrical who have been a large part of the series ever since. In 2007, the major sponsor of the Sandown 500 was Just-Car Insurance & was won by Craig Lowndes, his fourth Sandown 500 victory, and Jamie Whincup. In 2008 the 500km event moved to the Phillip Island with Sandown remaining on the calendar as a sprint round and looking at securing a ten year deal with V8 Supercars in the near future.
