Wilgefortis art exhibition

A group of 10 local artists has sought inspiration from the bearded,
female St Wilgefortis as the subject of a unique exhibition to be held
at the Art Factory Gallery, 84 Merivale Street, South Brisbane from
20-25 July 2012.

Wilgefortis is a figure of folklore and fascination. Her name in
various European languages was associated with anxiety, grief, escape,
and liberation – qualities which the artworks presented in this show
explore and express in many ways.

Legend tells of Wilgefortis’ betrothal to a King of Sicily, despite a
vow of virginity she had made. Her prayers for help in resisting the
marriage were answered when she grew a beard and moustache and the
proposal was withdrawn. Some theories suggest that she was invented by
Germanic tribes to explain images brought by Catholic missionaries of
a crucified figure with a beard and a gown.

St Wilgefortis was revered by people who sought relief from hardship,
especially women who wanted to be rid of their abusive husbands. Most
of the works in this show contain an element of blue; a colour often
associated with the attire of female saints as well as with sadness,
freedom, excellence and authenticity.

The artists invite all who are interested to join us on the feast day
of St Wilgefortis for opening night, Friday 20 July from 5pm onwards.
The exhibition will continue 10.00am – 5.00pm daily through to 25
July.
