A fond remembrance, The School of Arts is a warm evocation of small-town country life and the unintentional chaos caused by a motley band of travelling players.

As the 1967 referendum to include Australia’s Indigenous population in the national census is about to take place, a touring theatre troupe is preparing to perform Hamlet at the local School of Arts.

But when troupe leader Byron Savage decides to spice up the performance with a loaded gun and is wounded in the process, he sparks a chain of events that turns the evening into a maelstrom of burlesque and vaudeville.

Bille Brown’s wonderfully comic new play is a tribute to an extraordinary time in Queensland’s cultural life that inspired many of our state’s leading artists, including the playwright himself.

The School of Arts is part of the statewide celebrations for Queensland’s 150th year.
