Globally recognised as the Godfather of Latin jazz , five-time Grammy award-winning Cuban pianist Chucho Valds is playing one night only and exclusively for Brisbane Festival 2009.



A major player in the movement that took post-revolutionary, Afro-Cuban music into the mainstream, Valds formed jazz bands Irakere, the first Cuban band to win a Grammy, in the seventies, and Crisol who also scored a Grammy, in the nineties. This decade his album Live at the Village Vanguard , recorded with his acoustic quartet, earned him the best Latin Jazz album accolade. He has performed with Herbie Hancock , Dizzy Gillespie , Carlos Santana and George Benson in the most prestigious venues of more than 50 countries and released more than 50 recordings.



Hot off the heels of his latest headline performances at Jazz Festivals across South America, marked by sell out tours, packed rooms and standing ovations, this charismatic performer brings the real spirit of Cuba to Brisbane, steeped in Latin tradition, infused with jazz and fuelled by revolution.



Cuban piano master Chucho Valds... hurtling through the mix of high-pressure virtuosity, cliffhanging improvisation and party-time salsa that made his legendary band Irakere a sensation 30 years ago - and which he still throws off as easily if he were whistling in the street .
